This position performs as a Medical Technician in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Health Care System, performing a variety of functions including accessioning specimens into computer system; collecting and evaluating patient specimens; answers questions relative to specimens; instructing and assisting patients; and preparing specimens to be sent to reference labs.

Collecting blood or urine specimens and ensures safe, non-traumatic processes are used to maintain patient safety and assure specimen quality. Performing blood collection using venipunctures, arterial punctures and capillary finger sticks with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required repeat collection, ensuring that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. Performing specimen collection in the emergency room, hospital rooms, extended care rooms and outpatient specimen collection area. Performing specimen performed independently without supervision; however, supervisor and medical technologists are available for consultation. Following standard operating procedures for guidance in specimen collection. Identifying tests that require special handling conditions and appropriately performs proper specimen collection. Preparing specimens, such as labeling, and decanting. Accessioning patient tests order for main laboratory and microbiology, remove canceled tests. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00 am-2:30 pm with rotating weekends and holidays Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
