Clinical Medical Assistant job description

The clinical assistant works the exam room and the back office rather than the front desk: taking and recording personal information and medical history, measuring vital signs, assisting the physician during examinations, giving injections or medication as the physician directs and state law permits, and collecting and preparing blood and other specimens. Depending on the state, the role can extend to basic laboratory tests, sterilizing instruments, disposing of contaminated supplies, instructing patients on medication, and drawing blood. BLS counts this track inside medical assistants as a whole, so the 833,900 jobs and the 13 percent projected growth cover both sides of the profession. Setting shows in the wages: outpatient care centers paid $48,560 and hospitals $46,910 in May 2025, against $45,520 in physicians' offices.
