In Carlsbad, in New Mexico's southeastern corner, Southeast New Mexico College is the only higher education provider in its area, and its lineage runs deeper than the name suggests: it was founded in 1950 as the Carlsbad Instructional Center, the state's first two year college. After six decades as a branch campus of New Mexico State University, it became an independent college effective July 1, 2021.
